Back in February, when the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles were facing each other in Super Bowl LIX, many wouldn’t have imagined the bad moment Patrick Mahomes and Jalen Hurts are going through right now.
Mahomes and the 6-7 Chiefs are barely alive in the playoff race, and for the first time since 2015, Kansas City haven’t won the AFC West. For nine seasons in a row, the Chiefs dominated the division. The last time they didn’t win it predates Patrick Mahomes, with Alex Smith starting in both 2016 and 2017, and Mahomes serving as the backup in 2017.

Meanwhile, things aren’t going that badly in Philadelphia, but Jalen Hurts still hasn’t played up to expectations. The controversial “tush push” has saved the Eagles on many occasions but has also put the team in the media spotlight due to the refs’ debatable decisions.
It also seems that offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo doesn’t trust Hurts to throw deep. Hurts has weapons most quarterbacks would do anything to have, led by Saquon Barkley, alongside receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Even with all those offensive weapons, Patullo prefers to run the ball or give almost any other play a chance before asking Hurts to throw.
Embarrassing Week 14 for Mahomes and Hurts
Against the Texans, Mahomes threw three interceptions and accounted for no touchdowns in a 20-10 loss. On the other hand, Hurts had four interceptions, a lost fumble, and no touchdowns in a 22-19 loss to the Chargers.
Eight turnovers and zero TDs for the Super Bowl LIX starting quarterbacks in Week 14.
Mahomes went 14 of 33 for 160 yards and three picks on Sunday, while Hurts completed 21 of 40 for 240 yards and four interceptions against the Chargers. Combined, that’s a passer rating of 25.29, according to Mike Florio’s Pro Football Talk.
