The Chiefs fell 31-28 to the Cowboys in one of the most anticipated matchups of NFL Week 13. Despite a strong game from Mahomes, who threw 4 touchdown passes, Kansas City couldn’t pull off the win and has now dropped 3 of its last 4 games. The situation has become very complicated for the Chiefs, both in the division and in the playoff race.
Patrick Mahomes and Dak Prescott share a postgame handshake that exposes the Chiefs QB
The Chiefs came into the Thanksgiving game motivated after an overtime win against the Indianapolis Colts, and Mahomes delivered an outstanding performance with 4 touchdown passes, two of them to Rashee Rice. However, the main issue was that the defense simply couldn’t stop Dak Prescott and company.
The game started with an interception thrown by Prescott, but from that point on, the Cowboys quarterback became unstoppable, finishing with 2 touchdown passes – one of them to CeeDee Lamb, who ended the game with 7 receptions, 112 yards, and a score. It’s also worth noting that the Chiefs are 1-5 this season when playing on the road.
The Chiefs have been warned
With the Denver Broncos defeating the Washington Commanders in overtime, Denver improved to 10-2. Meanwhile, the Chiefs sit at 6-6 with only five games remaining, meaning their chances of winning the division have virtually disappeared. Kansas City had won the division title for nine straight seasons, but that streak is likely over.
Since 2014, the Chiefs have made the playoffs every year, and although they still have a chance this season, the situation is becoming increasingly difficult. Former Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith delivered a harsh message to Andy Reid and his team: “It’s major panic time.”
Mahomes knows it too. After the loss to the Cowboys, the quarterback admitted they need to be much more consistent: “We can beat anybody, but we’ve shown that we can lose to anybody. We’ve got to be more consistent,” said the three-time Super Bowl champion.
Next week’s opponent will be the Houston Texans, who are one game ahead of the Chiefs and are direct competitors for a playoff spot. A loss to Houston would put Kansas City in an even tougher position. The good news for the Chiefs is that the game will be at home, where they hold a 5-1 record this season.
