The Kansas City Chiefs are on their NFL bye week, but that isn’t stopping quarterback Patrick Mahomes from making news and staying active in the headlines. On Saturday, November 8, Mahomes was in Lubbock, Texas, for “College GameDay” and the game between No. 7 BYU Cougars and No. 8 Texas Tech, and he dropped news that impacts the college football world.

Mahomes and the Chiefs are coming off a tough loss to the Buffalo Bills on Saturday, November 2, with a 28-21 final score. That loss stung as the team went into their bye week, but it also has to be put into perspective, and Mahomes and the Chiefs can’t let it ruin their week off. Instead of sulking in their loss, Mahomes appeared on “College GameDay” with a smile on his face and an announcement to make.

“College GameDay” is an ESPN TV program that travels to broadcast from a different major college sporting event each week. “The show travels to a different college campus or game site each week of the season from late August and early September through the College Football Playoff National Championship in January,” the show states on their official website. ESPN announces the locations a week in advance, and they pick the games to highlight based on competitive matchups, rivalries and games of interest.

So, Mahomes and “College GameDay” were at Texas Tech on Saturday, the college that Mahomes attended. Last year, Texas Tech started a decade-long partnership with Adidas, the same company that has a deal with Mahomes.

At the event, Mahomes and Adidas made an announcement and launched the second “Team Mahomes” NIL class. The program is honoring five Texas Tech athletes, including softball player NiJaree Canady, soccer player Sam Courtwright, quarterback Behren Morton, basketball player Christian Anderson and track athlete Malachi Snow. The athletes each met Mahomes on Saturday and were honored during the game.

“Texas Tech will always be home for me, so I’m proud to give back to the school and community who helped shape me on and off the field,” Mahomes said in an official statement from Adidas. He added, “As the partnership with adidas continues to evolve and expand, we’re redefining not just the future of Red Raider sports, but college athletics more widely.”

Patrick Mahomes Was a Guest Picker
Mahomes was at “College GameDay” serving as celebrity guest picker. While there, he donned his custom Adidas “Too Cold” Texas Tech uniform, featuring his gladiator logo.

“Patrick Mahomes’ impact on Texas Tech has been immeasurable,” Kirby Hocutt, Texas Tech athletics director, said. Hocutt added that Mahomes’ “ongoing investment in our athletes, notably through Team Mahomes, showcases his and Adidas’ belief in and commitment to the future of Texas Tech athletics.”

Now, Mahomes will have to get back to his day job as the quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs. His stats in the Buffalo Bills game were lower than usual for the championship-winning quarterback. According to NFL research, the game marked the first time in Mahomes’ career he completed fewer than 50% of his passes. He also finished 15 of 34 for 250 yards with one interception. Mahomes was coming off a three-game winning streak for the Chiefs, which saw him completing 74% of his passes for an average of 281 yards.
