Donald Trump lashed out at Afghan refugees, Somali immigrants and Joe Biden in an unhinged rant in response to two National Guard troops being shot in Washington DC last night. But there’s one problem with his blame game.

The US President said 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal had been allowed into the country as part of Operation Allies Welcome, following the fall of Kabul in 2021. “He was flown in by the Biden administration in September 2021,” he said in a statement last night. “On those infamous flights that everybody was talking about. Nobody knew who was coming in. Nobody knew anything about it. His status was extended under legislation signed by President Biden, a disastrous president, the worst in the history of our country.”

He went on: “This attack underscores the single greatest national security threat facing our nation. The last administration let in 20 million unknown and unvetted foreigners from all over the world, from places that you don’t want to even know about. No country can tolerate such a risk to our very survival.”

Then for some reason he attacked the Somali community in Minnesota, who had nothing to do with the attack. He said: “An example is Minnesota, where hundreds of thousands of Somalians are ripping off our country, and ripping apart that once great state. Billions of dollars are lost, and gangs of Somalians come from a country that doesn’t even have a government — no laws, no water, no military, no nothing – as their representatives in our country preach to us about our Constitution, and how our country is no good.”

And he indicated he will use the shooting as a pretext for ramping up deportations – even for people in the country legally. “We’re not going to put up with these kind of assaults on law and order by people who shouldn’t even be in our country. We must now reexamine every single alien who has entered our country from Afghanistan under Biden,” he said. “And we must take all necessary measures to ensure the removal of any alien from any country who does not belong here or add benefit to our country. If they can’t love our country, we don’t want them. America will never bend and never yield in the face of terror.

It’s true that Lakanwal entered the US as a refugee under the Biden administration in 2021. But he was granted asylum after Trump became President.

Lakanwal applied for asylum in 2024 – after Trump took office. And the Department of Homeland Security last night confirmed his application was granted in April 2025. Lakanwal was in the process of applying for a green card – permanent residency – but that application was pending.

The names of the wounded troops, and their condition, have not been officially confirmed. West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey initially posted on social media that two of his state’s Guard members were killed. He later walked that back, saying his office was “receiving conflicting reports” about their condition. Morrisey has not elaborated. The two Guard members were among nearly 2,200 deployed to DC during Trump’s surge in response to his claims of a crimewave in the capital. There was no crimewave, in fact, crime was dramatically down on the year before.
