With the 2025 NFL regular season done and dusted, there’s plenty of questions facing the future of each team that did not make the playoffs.

The Kansas City Chiefs have plenty of unknowns ahead of them. In addition to a significant number of free agents, the question of Travis Kelce’s retirement and Patrick Mahomes’ recovery from a torn ACL are at the forefront.

With all those unknowns in mind, one sports writer believes that the team should consider a complete rebuild.

In an article titled ‘Bold Statements Following the 2025 NFL Regular Season’, Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon believes that the Chiefs should start with a clean slate.

That includes, in his view, considering a possible trade to move on from the face of their franchise who just finished the fifth year of his ten-year, $450million contract.

‘Mahomes is too much of a staple for the franchise to move on this quickly, and it would likely cost them a ton of money to trade him (even if he lifts his no-trade clause),’ Gagnon wrote.

‘He’s probably not going anywhere, but the Chiefs shouldn’t rule it out in the event of a blockbuster offer. Regardless, they need to regroup and rebuild around him in dramatic fashion or this whole thing will begin to rot.’

It’s hard to imagine a team possessing what would be required to acquire Mahomes – even on the back of a knee surgery.

Any trade for the superstar would likely need to involve multiple first-round draft picks being sent to the Chiefs as well as some considerable player talent.

Then there’s the money to consider. According to Spotrac, Mahomes’ base salary and cap hit were $1.255m and over $28m respectively.

But in 2026, both those numbers balloon dramatically. His salary grows to a staggering $45.35m while his cap hit jumps to an eye-watering $78.2m.

Per Spotrac, there’s only eight teams that could absorb such a cap hit outright: the Tennessee Titans, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Chargers, New York Jets, Washington Commanders and Los Angeles Rams.

A trade with the division rival Raiders and Chargers would likely be ruled out. The Commanders and Titans both have promising young quarterbacks already. The Rams have an MVP candidate in Matthew Stafford. The less that could be said about the Jets, the better.

All of this is to say that a trade involving Mahomes at this stage of his career is likely little more than a flight of fancy. Add in the unknown about his recovery from his current injury and any move for him would be risky.
