Travis Kelce, the Kansas City Chiefs star tight end, who is also famous for being Taylor Swift’s boyfriend, will play in the NFL for at least one more season. The 35-year-old’s most recent game was the Chiefs’ humiliating 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in last month’s Super Bowl. Afterward, Kelce said he was considering retirement. He said he would take some time to think about his decision.
This week, he’s done thinking. The Chiefs announced that Kelce will play on. He discussed his decision on this week’s episode of New Heights, the podcast he co-hosts with his brother, former Philadelphia Eagle Jason Kelce. If you’re a business leader or entrepreneur, his reasoning might help you through the next tough decision of your own.
Here’s why Kelce is playing another season
“Why are you playing another season?” Jason asked Travis. “Why are you going to go out there, risk injury, and make less money than you could make not playing football?” Though Travis is the highest-paid tight end in history with $17 million a year of guaranteed pay, he would likely make more as a sports commentator. He also has a growing Hollywood career.
He’s known as a big spender, and he admitted the idea of earning more was tempting. But in the end, he said, “I love playing.” He added that he still thought he could play at a high level, and perhaps do better than he did this past season. “I got a bad taste in my mouth on how I ended the year and how well I was playing,” he said. “And I love so many people in Kansas City, both in that facility, in the community, and it’s home for me now. And you know, I don’t want to leave that life yet.”
I love playing. Those three simple words can tell you all you need to know about Kelce’s decision. And they can help you when you’re facing a difficult decision of your own.
Kelce chooses love
In my favorite commencement speech of all time, the actor Jim Carrey told a simple truth. Nearly everything we do in life and work is motivated by either fear or love. Fear isn’t always bad. If you schedule a routine screening because you fear illness, that’s a good thing. But, as Carrey said, the more we make choices based on love instead of fear, the happier and more successful we’re likely to be.
That’s just what Kelce did. Even before this week’s New Heights, it was obvious how much he loves playing for the Chiefs. He loves the game, and the energy of the fans. He loves Chiefs head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes, one of his closest friends. For Kelce, all that love won out over every other consideration.
Asked about his decision process, Kelce admitted it was based on emotion. “It’s just off of feel,” he said. He’s not someone who measures the pros and cons when making a choice, he added. “I just go off of feel, a pure gut feeling.”
Jason Kelce looks for decision help
That’s no surprise if you’ve followed Travis Kelce long enough to have a sense of his personality. What was surprising is that Jason Kelce, who tends to be much more analytical, often turns to his younger brother for decision-making help. “I think way too hard about this thing and that thing,” he said. “And I’ll call you, and you have this really good way of not worrying about all these little meaningless, dumb things I’m worried about. It’s like, ‘No. What do you want to do? Do you want to do this or not?’ Nine times out of 10, it’s great advice for me to get out of my own head.”
Next time you find yourself overthinking a difficult decision, or making an endless list of pros and cons, try Travis Kelce’s approach instead. Just ask yourself what you love most and listen for the answer. Chances are, it will lead you to the right choice.
