The death of Her Majesty The Queen was announced on 8 September 2022 with Robert Aldridge, the Right Honourable Lord Provost and Lord Lieutenant of the City of Edinburgh, leading tributes on behalf of the people of Edinburgh. Our heartfelt sympathies and condolences are with all the members of the Royal Family at this very sad time.
Her Majesty The Queen is bound to Edinburgh by ties of ancestry, affection and duty, with the long a respectful relationship with Scotland and the Scots beginning soon after her birth in 1926. This has only deepened during her many private as well as official visits here during the seven decades of her reign. And, of course, her parents shared a common ancestor in Robert II, King of Scots.
The Royal Familyβs official Scottish residence, the Palace of Holyroodhouse, where HM The Queen played host to many Garden Parties as part of Edinburghβs Royal Week each July, is located in our historic Old Town. And, during her countless visits to the Capital, she reached out to our charities, veterans, serving personnel, hospitals and children and won a very special place in the hearts of Scottish people.
On 9 September 2015, the same day she opened the Borders-to-Edinburgh Railway line, she became the longest reigning British monarch in history.
